The sailing area around the Seychelles

The Seychelles:

The Seychelles consist of altogether 115 granite islands and coral-atolls with a land area of only about 450 square kilometres. Many of these Islands are uninhabited. The archipelago lies in the western Indian Ocean north of Madagascar and about 1600km east of Mombassa (Kenya), about 4° south of the Equator. Almost every island is surrounded by a coral-reef.

The Seychelles lie outside of the so called thunderstorm- and cyclone belt. Therefore there are almost no thunderstorms in the area. The Seychelles embrace the “Inner Islands” with the main island Mahé where the capital Victoria, the airport and our charter-yachts are, and the “Outer Islands” to which amongst others the 24 coral islands belong.

The “Inner Islands” consist of Mahé, Praslin, La Digue, Curieuse, Frégate, Cousin, Cousine, Silhouette and North. In addition there are 33 smaller islands. Besides beautiful beaches you can find the National Park “Vallée de Mai”, which is definitely worth it to be visited.

This is the place where the giant palm trees “Coco de Mer” grow, which became a symbol of the Seychelles. Nearby is Curieuse, which is inhabited by giant turtles. Only a few miles south-east is the probably best-known island, La Digue, whose rock-fringed sandy beaches are known from several Bacardi commercials.

The “Outer Islands” are divided into two groups; the “Amirants” to which the 24 coral islands belong consist of African Banks, St. Joseph, Poivre and Alphonse, as well as the Farquhar- and Aldabra-Group which consist of the islands Providence, Farquhar, Cosmoldeo and Aldabra. Aldabra is the world’s biggest coral-atoll and after Cousteau the most beautiful place in the world. The islands Coetivy and Plate are not dedicated to any of the two groups.

Sailing around the Seychelles is possible all year round. There are always light winds, which can gain strength as soon as the north- or rather the southmonsun kick in. The temperature varies between 26 and 29°C but is a little bit chillier from June until November.
