The name "Alghero" is supposed to derive from the way Sardinian people called its bay - "s'alighera" (the seaweed spot) - due to the great quantity of seaweed accumulated by the movement of the waves. Artistically and culturally rich, with its characteristic historical centre, Alghero is just a few miles from the wonderful bay of Porto Conte, a place well sheltered from the wind and facing the splendid Capo Caccia, a headland which hosts the famous Grotte di Nettuno (Neptune Grotto). |
After sailing north along the coast a few miles you find Stintino (30 miles), the island of Asinara, La Maddalena, a group of islands, and Costa Smeralda (80 miles). Sailing South we meet Bosa Marina (20 miles), the island of Mal di Ventre (34 miles) and Carloforte (36 miles). To the West, towards open sea, at a distance of 190 miles you reach the Balearic islands Majorca, Menorca, Ibiza (Eivissa) and beautiful Formentera. For those loving sailing on the open sea - here is where your perfect holidays start. |
